Powerspan Testifies at House Subcommittee Hearing on
Coal-Based Electricity Generation

NEW DURHAM, N.H., June 25, 2003 — Frank Alix, Chairman and CEO of Powerspan Corp., testified before the U.S. House Subcommittee on Energy and Air Quality yesterday. The subcommittee, chaired by Representative Joe Barton (R-TX), heard testimony on future options for the generation of electricity from coal.

Alix testified on Powerspan's ECO® technology, a multi-pollutant control process that provides high removal of sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, mercury, and fine particulate matter from coal-fired power plants. The ECO technology also produces a marketable fertilizer co-product, eliminating landfill disposal of waste.

In addressing the existing and proposed U.S. Department of Energy clean coal technology programs, including the Clean Coal Power Initiative and FutureGen, Alix stated, "I believe that it is possible to produce more electricity from coal and to significantly reduce or even eliminate the environmental and public health impacts of that production. Our ECO technology could make an important contribution to that objective. When evaluating future options for the generation of electricity from coal, it is important to consider the existing fleet of coal-fired generating plants and ensure that clean coal technology programs strike a proper balance between serving the needs of existing plants and providing for the next generation."

Coal-fired electric generation plants are the cornerstone of America's power system, producing over 50 percent of the nation's electricity. Based on current usage rates, the U.S. has an estimated 250-year supply of coal reserves.
