Powerspan and Wheelabrator Form Alliance to Deliver Commercial ECO Systems

Related News: Wheelabrator Acquired by Aquila Power Services

NEW DURHAM, N.H., July 29, 2002—Powerspan Corp., a clean-energy technology company, and Wheelabrator Air Pollution Control Inc. (WAPC) have formed an alliance to provide commercial ECO™ systems to the electric utility industry.

Powerspan's Electro-Catalytic Oxidation (ECO) technology is a proprietary multi-pollutant control system for coal-fired power plants. The ECO system oxidizes pollutants in the gas stream—namely sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and mercury—and collects them in a compact wet scrubber and wet electrostatic precipitator. ECO technology avoids the need for landfill disposal of waste by converting the sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides removed from the flue gas into salable ammonium sulfate nitrate fertilizer.

Under the terms of the alliance agreement, WAPC will provide its wet scrubbing technology, which includes all design engineering and equipment supply, utilizing its extensive utility experience with flue gas desulfurization systems. Powerspan will retain responsibility for overall process engineering, the supply of proprietary electro-catalytic oxidation equipment, and project management.

According to WAPC President Antonio DoVale, the alliance agreement benefits both companies. "We are excited to be working closely with Powerspan to develop and execute projects that will utilize our combined expertise and experience. Together we will deliver an alternative technology that should result in significant capital and operating cost savings for our power generating customers."

Powerspan Chairman and CEO Frank Alix said, "Our ECO process knowledge coupled with Wheelabrator's extensive experience in large air pollution control projects will allow generating companies to acquire commercial ECO systems with confidence."
